An Evening Of Doordarshan Nostalgia With Me…

An Evening Of Doordarshan Nostalgia With Me…
Well played, Mom and dad!

My mom and dad made it clear that we would get a cable T.V. connection once Di (my elder sister) will clear her 10th board examination. You know, parents are extremely smart and they know when to play which card which assures their win. Once Di cleared her board exams we went to our parents to request for that cable T.V. As expected they had another brilliant card which was my 10th examination. Well played, mom and dad.

In short, we are four siblings, as a result, this saga of board examination took quite a lot of time and cable T.V. reached our drawing room quite late. Once we got the cable connection, we were super excited.

However, the excitement didn’t last long because we missed the charm of DD national. Yup, you read it right there was a charm in waiting for early morning “Rangoli” or evening “Chitrhaar”. Twice a week for a movie was fixed we waited for those days. I want to share an incident today that still makes me chuckle when I think about it….

Movie buff…

I was in 9th standard and there was this movie called “Dhadkan” which was a big hit back then and was being telecasted on T.V. (Friday night). As per our house rules, we were supposed to sleep by 9:30 at max. My mom made sure that we followed the rule without a miss. We had the just two-room house back then. All of us had dinner and went to bed. I, was, am and will forever be a big movie buff.

I so wanted to watch the movie but it was a late night movie (Yeah! 9:30 or 10 in the night were considered late night movies for kids. Well, the timing to hit the bed for my daughter is still the same as it was for us when we were kids. Revenge time… hehehehe) and I knew mom would never agree to it. I just couldn’t sleep because I could hear the dialogues and songs of the movie from the other room. While I lay on the bed, through a door gap I could see the television clearly.

In my mind, I had the master plan. I will pretend that I am asleep. Cover my face with a duvet and just leave a small gap open for one eye. No one would see that I am awake and I will watch a movie without any glitch.

Loophole

All perfect plans have a loophole and my loophole was “ME”. While watching that movie, I made sure that my plan works well. However, I got so engrossed in watching a movie that one time my dad got up and stood in front of T.V. (I think he was looking for some papers). I literally yelled “Papa side ho jayiye movie Nahi dikh rahi”………..

Yup, that actually happened. The minute I realized what I did, without uttering another word, I got up and slept at the extreme corner of the bed on the other side.

  1. haha! I can imagine that.. My dad was a bigger movie buff and my mom and younger sis the opposite, so believe it or not, he got me involved in his master plan to watch movies without disturbing others!

  2. ha ha this is such a cute incidence and reminded me my childhood memories. yes those days watching your favorite program had a different charm as we had limited options only. indeed those were the golden days of my life..you had made me nostalgic.

  3. Ha ha ha..We too used to miss cable back then but now I feel so nostalgic watching doordarshan.. kaash wo bachpan k din waaps as jayein

  4. Hahahaha… That was my first reaction after reading your story! I also have endless such naughty stories of watching TV, not only Doordarshan, wherein I thought myself to be very smart not to be caught at the end ? Thanks for such a sweet nostalgia laden post…

  5. I got nostalgic reading your post, yes we followed the strict rules set for us unlike today’s kids. The post made me smile, keep writing

  6. That’s reflection of my childhood memories also when Sunday is incomplete without chitrahar and movie at 4 pm. I think the carze of every little is more than in compare to today’s world.

  7. I have so many memories of my childhood similar to yours. It’s so nice to hear from our elders about it. They make us nostalgic and we feel like going back to our childhood.

  8. An interesting article on parenting. I guess this issue has been faced by multiple kids when it comes to cable TV connection. Nowadays, I guess the approach would be yo cut off the internet ?

  9. This reminded me of how my parents was to us. It’s not that it was bad but they was pretty strick on television. Staying up late was a big no no on us.

  10. Haha…I can’t believe you actually did that! Kavita just as you are trying to be like your mom setting strict deadlines, remember that your kids are going to be like you and find every loophole possible…so be prepared 😉

  11. Hahaha! Loved this one! I remember we got our first TV set when I finished my 10th. And I walked so proudly with my dad as we came back home from the shop, with the delivery guy walking behind us carrying the TV on his head. I was sure all the other kids in the locality were envying me.

  12. hahaha…this was hilarious…even we were supposed to sleep on time just as per the rules…but I was allowed to break them while watching a cricket match with my dad or a movie with my mom 😉

  13. This actually made me nostalgic. Like you we also got cable TV post the tenth boards. I was a big tv buff too. Watched all those DD 1 serials 🙂

  14. haha! This is such a funny story of you getting caught red handed watching a movie past your bedtime! Chitrahaar used to be one of my favorite programs on DD. Sometimes, I miss the simplicity of those days!

  15. Oh my God! Seriously… Same pinch..for this:
In my mind, I had the master plan. I will pretend that I am asleep. Cover my face with a duvet and just leave a small gap open for one eye. No one would see that I am awake and I will watch a movie without any glitch.

    Loophole

All perfect plans have a loophole and my loophole was “ME”. While watching that movie, I made sure that my plan works well. This had happened with me so many times, kavita awesome super awesome. Virtual hugs.. Love you for sharing this blog

  16. That really made me chuckle. But you referred to Dhadkan as ‘back then’. Makes me feel old now hehe. It was a really good movie, unfortunately you couldn’t finish it ?

  17. I used sneak out of the room keep the tv volume low so my parents would not know I am watching ‘Friends’ at night. Also MTV. I do not have memories of movies on Doordarshan but definitely Chitrahaar & Ramayan & Mahabharat. Those were some carefree childhood times. I went back memory lane reading your post.

  18. That was a funny story 🙂 It’s funny how different parents were then vs now. There are some things that we are strict on but as a whole our parenting approach is much “softer” that is what my parents call it anyway.

  19. Hahaha…that must have been quite a hilarious scene, getting caught red-handed watching television. Parents were such disciplinarians back then. So are we as parents, but somehow I feel our generation of parents is quite flexible. Doordarshan sure is a part of some amazing childhood memories for all of us.
