If there is one thing that a mom hates the most, then it is to see her baby suffer from any kind of discomfort. The trouble with little babies is that they can’t express their discomfort well. A stuffy nose can be uncomfortable for your babies and it can adversely affect their feeding, which usually results in sleepless nights. Cold and cough are common in young children as their immune system is still developing. Since newborns know how to breathe only through their little nostrils at first, congestion can be really troublesome for them. Nasal congestion does not allow a child to sleep peacefully and therefore kids get deprived of sleep and feel drowsy.
My baby is a winter born and no matter how hard I try to keep her warm, she often falls prey to these stuffy nose problems. From home remedies to medicines, I tried everything wherein few worked, few didn’t. I made a list of a few things which worked well for me. Here are a few tips which might help you in soothing a baby with a stuffy nose:
Keep the baby hydrated
Staying hydrated thins mucus, whether it is a baby or an adult, if one is going through congestion then it is important to keep them well hydrated. Keep offering them liquid in some form. Coconut water is also a good option if your kid likes the taste of it. A breastfed baby should be offered milk at a regular interval or as per the baby’s demand to keep them hydrated. Give your little one plenty of liquid.
Steam helps a lot
Children between the age group of 0 – 1-year-olds are obligatory nose breathers. When they suffer from Nasal congestion, they have difficulty breathing. Sitting in a steamy bathroom for a few minutes with your baby can provide them with a bit of relief. Run a hot shower for a few minutes and when the bathroom is steamy, sit in the room with the Baby for a bit. This will help loosen the mucus in the nostrils.
Nose Drops
There are many brands that offer you nasal drops which help in clearing the stuffy nose for babies but one should always consult a pediatrician before giving any medication to their child. My favorite out of many is Nasivion (Mini) Baby Nose Drops. Due to nasal congestion, children tend to avoid eating or find it difficult to eat. A right dosage of nasal drops can really help babies and they can sleep peacefully.
Nasivion Dosage: Up to the age of 4 weeks, instill 1 drop of the solution into each nostril 2-3 times per day. From the 5th week of life until the age of 1 year, instill 1-2 drops into each nostril 2-3 times per day or as directed by the physician. (Please read the instructions carefully)
Use a bulb syringe
These bulb syringes are also known as nasal aspirators. Make sure to buy the one which is specially made for your baby’s tiny nostrils. Children get extremely cranky because of the discomfort caused due to nasal congestion and using a bulb syringe can really help the situation. Lay the baby gently in a comfortable position. Squeeze the bulb and gently insert the tip into baby’s nostril.
For more information about the Nasivion baby nose drop, you can visit the website. You can use saline drops as well. Nasivion Nasal Saline Solution is my first line of treatment, as it is safe and can be used by anyone. If the problem is aggravated then after consulting the doctor, one can opt for Nasivion (Mini) Baby Nose Drops or Nasivion Pediatric (Child) Nose drops depending on the age of the child. Put a few drops into each nostril and then use a bulb syringe to remove mucus. Usually, nasal congestion goes away on its own within a week. Unfortunately, it’s pretty common for babies to have nasal congestion from time to time. If your baby is active, eats and drinks well then there is nothing to worry about.
