Remember the days of our summer vacation when all we had to do was eat and play? Mom was in charge of what we ate and how much we ate. Summers meant homemade ice-creams and a watermelon party. I remember during vacations all of us (me and my siblings) kept telling our random demands of what we wanted to eat. Mom made sure that every demand was met with lip-smacking delicious and nutritious food.
I cannot cook even half of what my mom used to make for us. However, I sure have learned the few ingredients she uses to include while cooking that keep us healthy as well. She always emphasized that food should not be cooked too much as it reduces the immune-boosting effect. Here is a list of superfoods that you can include in your kids’ diet and that will boost the immunity of your kid:
-
Fruits
Apple is good for your health. It supports the immune system as it contains antioxidants. Apples are a great source of slow-release energy. They contain Vitamins C and B which provide a much-needed energy boost. Bananas are loaded with naturally occurring sugar. It fills their tummy and provides the energy to jump all around.
-
Turmeric
If I have to name one most magical ingredient from our spices box then it has to be turmeric. When we were kids, mom used to put a pinch of turmeric in minor cuts and it’s used to get healed faster. It is a great immunity-boosting spice which should be included in your daily diet. Turmeric has anti-microbial properties.
-
Leafy Green Vegetables
Leafy greens such as kale, mustard greens, and spinach, when cooked with the minimum spices, are great immunity boosters. They provide iron, calcium, and other nutrients and help in cleansing the bowel. Antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and vitamins that promote vision and bone health are packed in spinach.
-
Yogurt/Curd
This one is my toddler’s favorite. She loves flavored yogurt. From smoothies to raita it can be used in many recipes and I am sure your little one would love it. Curd has Probiotics which are nowadays widely marketed as health shots to be had daily.
-
Coconut Water
I love coconut water, especially the one with malai. Coconut water helps boost energy levels instantly. It hydrates your system and washes out toxins.
-
Lemons
Lemons are packed with flavor, but not calories. A delicious, chilled Nimbu pani (Lemon water) is a must-drink this season. It is a wonderful source of Vitamin C and antioxidants.
-
Eggs
Egg yolk is a rich source of Vitamin B and D. It is a good source of protein which helps in rebuilding muscle. Eggs are a good energy booster and replenish lost energy.
-
Honey
It is advisable to give honey to kids of 1 year and above. Honey has antimicrobial properties. It coats the throat and eases the irritation of the throat. Use it on pancakes or any health drink and little ones will love it.
-
Dry fruits and Nuts
Walnuts, raisins, figs, sunflower seeds, and almonds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. My little one loves cashews as well. This will help your kid cover the daily dose of healthy fats in the diet. Make sure the quantity is in moderation.
We all need energy-giving foods that will boost our metabolism, regulate muscle function, and give us instant energy. Fruits always are the best snack options when it comes to kids. For example, watermelon. It is low in sugar and high in vitamins A and C, this summer treat is a great, refreshing, low-calorie snack. Foods that are processed, canned, frozen, or packaged are harder to digest, it is advisable to avoid it as much as I can.
